Privacy Policy

Chasr is a nightlife app for Ann Arbor, for people 21 and over: it shows which bars are busy tonight, what deals are running, and where your friends are if they choose to share. This policy covers the Chasr app and chasr.club, including the dashboard bars use. It explains what we collect, why, who it goes to, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.

Creating an account

You sign in with a mobile phone number. We send a six-digit code by text and you type it back. You can also set a password, and then sign in with your number and that password instead of a code. We keep only a scrambled form of a password that cannot be turned back into it, so nobody at Chasr can see it. We store the number so you return to the same account each time. Accounts made before phone sign-in may also have an email address and password on file; for those we use the email only to send a password reset link when you ask for one.

Before you give a number, the app asks whether you are 21 or older. Your answer is saved on your phone, not on our servers. It is your statement, not an identity check, and we do not verify it.

You get a handle (a short username). One is generated for you and you can change it. You can add a profile photo if you want one.

If you choose to look around before signing up, we create an account with no phone number, with its own handle. It is treated like any other account below, including for crowd counting if you allow location. If you leave without signing up, that guest account stays on our servers; it cannot be traced to your phone number because it never had one.

Text messages

We text you one thing: a one-time code to sign in. You trigger it by entering your own phone number on the sign-in screen, or by confirming a new number in Settings. We do not send marketing, promotions, newsletters, or recurring messages of any kind on this program, and we never text a number that was not entered on one of those screens.

Frequency: one message per code you ask for, plus one more if you ask us to resend it.

Message and data rates may apply. Message delivery depends on your mobile carrier, and carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

Reply STOP to opt out of messages, or HELP for help. You can also message us in the app (Settings → Message Us) or use our contact page. Our Support page has more help with signing in. Opting out means we can no longer send sign-in codes to that number until you reply START.

We do not share or sell your mobile number, or your consent to receive these texts, to anyone for their marketing or promotional purposes. Your number goes only to our text message provider, to deliver the code. That provider generates and checks the codes; we do not store them.

What we collect, and why

Phone numberTo sign you in and keep you on the same account. It is never shown to other people. Friends find you by handle or QR code, not by number.
Handle and photoHow you appear to friends, to people on a crawl with you, and on reviews you write. Anyone signed in can find you by searching your exact handle, or at least its first five characters, to send a friend request. Your photo is stored at a public web address, so treat it as public.
LocationTo show bars near you, count how busy a bar is, and record your visits. See Location below.
Bar visitsWhich bar, which night, roughly how long you stayed, and whether it was late. This runs crowd levels, your points and levels, and your night-out stats.
Bars you follow and viewYour Following list, notifications from bars you follow, and what we show you first.
Deals you activateYour pass, the deal's per-night limits, the bar confirming it, and the record a bar's fee is based on.
Points, levels, rewardsThe league. Points are granted by our server, never by your phone.
Friends and requestsWho you are connected to, and what each of you can see. See Friends and crawls.
Crawls and messagesThe stops, members, and messages (up to 280 characters each) of a crawl you are on, shared only with that crawl's members.
ReviewsPublic: shown with your handle and photo to anyone, in the app or through our servers. You can edit or remove your own review. Its stars and text, without your name, are also used by the AI that writes that bar's Review Summary.
Reports and blocksTo act on reports, keep blocked accounts apart, and fix deals people tell us are wrong.
Event RSVPsTo show your pass for an event. Bars see only the total number going.
Home cityThe city the app is showing you, from your location, the map, or your own pick. Stored once you sign up with a phone number, and used to send city-wide notifications.
Push tokenTo send notifications to your phone, if you allow them.
Usage and errorsWhat you do in the app (for example opening a bar, activating a deal, or following a bar) and errors that happen, so we can fix what breaks. Linked to a random device ID before you sign in, and to your account ID after, including on that phone after you sign out.
Messages to usWhat you write to us in the app (Settings → Message Us) or on our contact page, the email address you give there, and our replies, so we can answer you. Only the Chasr team reads them.
Camera and photosThe camera scans a friend's QR code, and takes a Check Line photo only when you choose to post one while at a bar. A Check Line photo is checked by AI, then shown on that bar's page until the bar closes (12 hours at most) without your name; we keep how far you were from the bar, not your exact location. Your photo library is used only to pick a profile photo. We receive nothing else from either. We do not use your microphone.

We do not collect your name, birthday, contacts, or advertising identifier. Like any internet service, the servers you connect to see your device's IP address.

Location

Only while the app is open. Chasr asks for location access "while using the app" only. It never asks for access at all times and never tracks you in the background.

While the app is open, location is used for three things:

  • Bars near you. The map sends the center of the area you are looking at to find bars there.
  • Crowd levels and your visits. Unless ghost mode is on, every three minutes while the app is open your phone sends its location to our server, which checks whether you are within about 150 meters of a bar. If you are, we record that you are at that bar tonight and for how long. If you are not, nothing is recorded. Your coordinates themselves are not stored. This happens even if you never share with friends.
  • Friends, if you share. See the next section.

Other people see a bar's crowd level as a number, never who is there. A bar with fewer than three people counted shows as zero, so no one can be picked out.

Ghost mode (Settings → Location settings → Hide me from friends) stops the location check completely and turns sharing with friends off. Ghost mode and sharing are one switch: turning sharing on turns ghost mode off. You can also refuse or revoke the location permission in your phone's settings. The app still works; you lose nearby sorting, crowd counting, and visit-based points.

Friends and crawls

Sharing with friends is off until you turn it on ("Show my nights out"). Friends are people you have both accepted.

  • Always visible to your friends: your handle and photo, your night-out stats (how many bars you have visited, nights out, late nights, and most visits to one bar), and your league points.
  • Only while you share and are out: which bar you are at and when you were last seen there, on your profile, in the league, and on the Friends page. Friends see the bar, not your exact position. The Friends page shows who is out only to friends who are sharing too.
  • On a crawl: everyone on the crawl sees each other's handles and photos, the stops, and the messages posted in it.

People who are not your friends or on a crawl with you see none of this, and nobody ever sees your phone number.

Bars and the owner dashboard

Bar owners and managers use a dashboard on chasr.club. They sign in with an email address and password. To claim a venue they give a contact name, email, their role, and optionally a phone number, good times to reach them, and a note, which we use to confirm they run the place. We store what they post: venue details, photos, deals, and events, which are public in the app.

For a bar that is billed we also keep its plan, a billing email, its invoices and disputes, and a customer record at our payment processor. Card details are entered on the payment processor's own pages and never reach us.

What a bar can see about guests: counts (visits, followers, activations, people going to an event, people a notification reached) and average length of stay, with the same three-person floor on visit numbers, and a single pass when staff confirm it, which shows the deal, a code, and the time. Through the dashboard a bar never sees your name, handle, phone number, location history, friends, or anything about you at another bar. When you report a deal, the bar sees the offer and the reason, not who reported it.

AI

We use AI for bar review summaries, to help draft our own social media posts, and to read bars' public websites and Instagram posts for deals and events. Bar review summaries are written from public Google reviews only. Many deals are gathered automatically. None of the AI we use is given your phone number, location, friends, messages, reviews, or anything that identifies you. Two things from your use of the app reach it: crowd counts for our social drafts, which are per-bar totals that never cover fewer than three people and never say who, and a Check Line photo you choose to post, which is sent on its own to be checked before it is shown. Details are on our AI and Automated Content page.

Who else handles it

We use a small number of service providers. They process information for us, to run Chasr, and for no other purpose, and they are bound to protect it at least as well as this policy does. These are the kinds of provider we use and what each one receives. If you want to know which companies they are, ask us and we will tell you.

Database and hostingStores your account and everything the app keeps, runs our server functions, and hosts chasr.club and our internal tools, with standard request logs. This is where your data lives.
Text messagesSends the sign-in code. Receives your phone number.
Notifications and updatesDelivers push notifications and app updates. Receives your push token and the notification.
App store and mapsThe app store you downloaded from distributes the app and delivers notifications to your phone, and the map is drawn by your phone's own map service.
Bar photosSome bar photos load from a mapping provider's servers, so that provider sees your device's IP address when they load.
AnalyticsUsage and error analytics, hosted in the United States.
Outside AI providerReview summaries, checking Check Line photos before they are shown, and our internal content and deal tools. See the AI section.
Payment processorBilling for bars: receives the bar's name, its billing email, and the card details the owner enters on the processor's own pages. Not used for guests.
EmailStores email we exchange with you, such as our replies to the contact form and bar dashboard sign-in emails.

If you choose to open directions in a maps app, a bar's reviews on another site, or a ride in a ride-share app, the app hands that service the bar as your destination, and that service's own privacy policy applies.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or to investigate fraud or abuse of deals and rewards. If Chasr is ever sold or merged, your information would move with it, and this policy would still apply to it until you are told otherwise.

No selling, no ads

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it for advertising, show ads, use advertising software, or track you across other companies' apps and websites. We use your precise location only to run the features described above.

How long we keep it

  • Your account, visit history, points, friends, follows, reviews, and RSVPs stay until you delete your account. You can remove a review, a follow, a friend, or an RSVP yourself at any time. For each bar, we keep only the latest time you were seen there; a crowd level only counts the last 60 minutes.
  • A crawl drops out of the app about 12 hours after it starts, but its stops, members, and messages stay on our servers until the person who started it deletes their account (or deletes the crawl before anyone joins). Your own crawl messages are removed when you delete your account; you cannot delete a single message yet.
  • Records of deal activations that a bar's fees are based on are kept after you delete your account, with your account removed from them.
  • Usage events already sent to our analytics provider stay there after you delete your account, linked to an account ID that no longer exists. Message us and we will delete them.
  • Your Message Us conversation in the app is deleted with your account. Messages sent through our contact page, and our replies, are kept with our support records until you ask us to delete them.
  • Bar owner accounts and what they post stay until the owner asks us to close them. Billing records are kept as long as we need them for accounting and tax.
  • Guest accounts made by looking around without signing up stay until we remove them; they have no phone number.
  • Backups and logs kept by our providers expire on their own schedules.

Deleting your account

In the app: Settings → Delete account (Settings is the gear icon at the top left of the You tab). It is immediate and it cannot be undone. Deleting the app from your phone does not delete your account.

Deleting removes your account, phone number, handle, profile photo, followed bars, visit and presence history, points and rewards, passes, RSVPs, friends, reviews, your crawl messages, the crawls you started (including other people's messages in them), the reports and blocks you made, your Message Us conversation, and your push token.

What stays: deal activation records for bar billing, with your account removed; usage events with our analytics provider until you ask us to delete them; settings saved on your phone until you delete the app; and provider backups until they expire.

If you would rather we did it, or you run a bar and want your owner account closed, message us in the app (Settings → Message Us) or use our contact page and tell us the phone number or handle on the account (for a bar dashboard account, its email address). We confirm the account is yours before deleting it. Step by step instructions, in the app and on the web, are on Delete your account.

Your privacy rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you, where it came from, why we use it, and who we disclose it to, and give you a copy in a portable format
  • correct information that is wrong
  • delete your information

To ask, message us in the app (Settings → Message Us) or use our contact page. We will confirm the request comes from the account holder before acting on it, for example by asking you to confirm details from the app, and we will answer within 45 days. You can use someone to ask on your behalf if they show us your permission. We will not treat you differently for using these rights. If we say no, we will tell you why, and you can reply to appeal; we will answer the appeal within 45 days.

California and other US states. If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas, or Virginia, these are the rights that law gives you, and this policy is our notice of what we collect. In the last 12 months we have collected the categories described in What we collect: identifiers (phone number, handle, account and device IDs), precise location, the content you post, and records of how you use the app, from you and your phone. We use them for the purposes in that table and disclose them only to the service providers listed above.

  • No sale, no sharing for ads. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we have not done so in the last 12 months. There is nothing to opt out of.
  • Sensitive information. Precise location is sensitive information under some state laws. We use it only to provide the features you use, as described in Location, and never to infer anything about you.
  • Under 21. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 21, so we do not sell or share information of anyone under 16.

Security

Information travels between your phone and our servers over encrypted connections. Our database checks every request against rules that limit each person to what they are allowed to see. No system is perfectly secure; if you find a problem, tell us.

Cookies and storage

chasr.club has no analytics, advertising, or third-party cookies, and loads no tracking scripts. Everything it stores in your browser is there to make the site work:

Passcode cookieWhile the site is behind its launch passcode screen, one cookie remembers that you entered the passcode. It is deleted when you close the browser.
Dashboard sign-inIf you sign in to the bar dashboard, your session is kept in your browser's local storage until you sign out.
Claim draftIf you start claiming a venue and need to confirm your email first, your answers are kept in local storage so the form is not blank when you come back. They are removed once the claim is sent.
Demo dashboardChanges you make in the demo dashboard are kept in local storage so they survive a refresh. Nothing in the demo is sent to us.
Site iconsA small background script stores the site's icons so it can be added to a home screen. It stores nothing else.

You can clear all of it in your browser's settings. Because we do not track you across sites, there is nothing for Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals to switch off; if your browser sends one, we treat it as a request not to sell or share your information, which we already do not do.

The app stores a few things on your phone: your settings (such as ghost mode), your age answer, recent searches, and a random ID used for analytics before you sign in.

Age

Chasr is for people 21 and over, and it is about places that serve alcohol. It is not directed at anyone under 21, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 21. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 21, we delete it. If you believe that has happened, tell us.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and we will tell you in the app before a material change takes effect.

Contact

Questions, requests, or anything that looks wrong: message us in the app (Settings → Message Us) or use our contact page. A person on our team reads every message.
